Meet Verb and Globe team rider, Marcel Maassen.

What’s up Marcel? What’s going on in your life at the moment?

Wadup people! I am working at Revolution and grinding my ass off for the paper. Skating the streets of Cape Town and playing a lot of XBOX. I just finished two games and I am so amped haha – NERD.

You’re originally from Pretoria. What was it like living there? Why did you decide to move to CT?

It was super fun living with the Plankie brothers; Joubert, Jansen, Skippy, Thys and Dennis WHL(wees huis lewe). Well, I get really bored of shit very quickly, so we all decided to move down about two years ago. Where the brothers go, I go. Hope that Skippy and D dawg can come down.

What are your best and worst things about Pretoria, and about Cape Town?

In Pretoria we have mad jocks with pointy shoes, highlights in the hair and the arms on those dude are bigger than my whole body! But in Cape town we have hipsters. I don’t know for how long, but I take them over jocks. Pretorian homies are so dope and it was always good to hang out, on and off the board. Cape Town’s lifestyle is just so much better, even though it’s expensive. I love it here. Skating through the streets with trouble makers and clowns is just the best thing to ask for. The only thing that sucks here is the cold fucking ocean water and the sharks.

You lived in Amsterdam for a few years. Tell us what that was like… Why did you come back to South Africa?

I lived in Utrecht, a little bit out of Amsterdam. The weed was so good! They were the best and worst times of my life. I am not going to go into a lot of detail because it’s a mad story that you could write a book about. I got into gangs and bad violence, and after four years of hustling, the cops finally got me. I had some bad shit on me so I got deported out of the country. I learnt a lot from that experience; never looking back, never doing the same things I did back then. We all do some dome things in life. I still do, but as long as you learn from it it’s all good.

How did you get into skateboarding?

Like everybody else, I saw my friends do it got into it right away I guess. I think most kids that start skating need to escape from something in life and skating is a good way too get out there and do your own thing. You can learn by yourself, not at school or from your mom or dad; just you and you alone. If you can do that, you can also stand alone and be strong as a person.

Got any tricks you’re working on getting?

Switch Lazer heel, one wheel nose manual nollie tripple tre out, haha!

What does the second half of 2013 look like for you?

Probably the same as now. Try to film some shit, skate, have fun and party! If I got cheese, bread, Xbox, skating and a roof over my head, it’s all good till 2020.

You have a couple tattoos. Which is your favorite and why?

The Hulk, because every person has got a second personality, even if they deny it. I want to grow big and break stuff or jump and smash shit, haha! I have this rib tattoo with shoes hanging over a streetlamp on the corner of a street. It’s for my homie that passed away in 2006. I took a pretty hard knock, so it means a lot to me.

What are you listening to recently?

Gangsta, Jurassic 5, bFake, RickRoss and always some Wu shit.

Anything else you want to say?

How do you start up a fan page?

Marcel MaassenSequence by Jansen van Staden. 180 nosegrind shovet out.
