KDC Canal Walk Grand Slam Photos
All Photos By Grant McLachlan and Eric Palmer. Words by Grant McLachlan.
The 4th Kimberley Diamond Cup Grand Slam skateboarding contest of 2014 took place at Canal Walk Shopping Centre in Cape Town over the weekend of the 29 – 31 of August. Cape Town is always one of the most entertaining stops as there is a huge skate scene and a lot of up-and-comers who are hungry to make a name for themselves. Over the course of the weekend thousands of spectators got to enjoy amazing skateboarding during the contest, demos by 20sk8 crew, live performances by Bfake and 5fm DJ’s DJ Warras and Stephanie B along.
Some the stand out skaters over the weekend had to be Alan Adams, Jean-marc Johannes, Alan Marola, who landed a huge transfer 50-50 during his run, and Kyle Trusky, who came in 3rd place and skated the a-frame with style and ease. Shuaib Philander skated consistently throughout the contest and won himself the Wildcard and also placed 2nd. In the end it was Khule Ngubane from Durban who added another Grand Slam title to his name after winning the last contest in Durban. Some of the most entertaining skating came out of the under 16s division with Tyler Kammies and Brad Baily getting a tie after their final runs. The winner was chosen after a tie-breaker run. They both skated amazingly but in the end it was Tyler Kammies who won for the second year in a row. Enwin Gelant was close behind in third place.
The Rider Cup came down two teams The Little Rascals who consisted of some of the youngest skaters in the who contest and 4 Stax who had Moses Adams, Mitchell Rice, Justus Kotze, and Jean-Marc Johannes; some of the best skateboarders in South Africa. The Little Rascals were landing trick after trick with no problem but 4 Stax took the win in the end with some great all-round skating.

Sokkie Jol J Bay Winter Fest
All photos by Grant Mclachlan.
It was a classic windy but sunny J-Bay winter’s morning that greeted the skaters from around the country at the 2014 Core Downhill Sokkie Jol presented by Sector9. Now in its second year and as part of the J-Bay Winterfest, it attracted over 80 riders and countless spectators. The course was laid-out on a slight downhill with a left hand corner and ramps assembled down the length (giving the race its unique twist). The obstacles included banks, rollers a tunnel and kicker jump. Skaters found the course rather intimidating initially due to the scale of the obstacles but quickly became accustomed to the ramps. The usual suspects stood out early on, with the likes of Ren Van Staden, Cam Adams and Alex Meyer shining. It was local boy Van Staden who took honours in the time trial and making him a sure favourite for the man-on-man racing. The racing in this format got tighter and tighter with each heat and the final saw Van Staden up against Alex Meyer. Both Meyer and Van Staden had used the strategy of a fast, solid push-off all day, knowing that a mistake at the top of the course would cost them lower down. It was Meyer who prevailed.
“It’s not a very long course so if you in the lead try not to bail because it’s hard to overtake. We came into the first berm really tight,” explained a stoked Meyer post race. “I think it was my pull-off that helped me stay in front of him though and I kept the lead going from there. This event was all about speed, but also knowing how to shed that speed to go up the berms. You needed some vert skating experience to help with the counter balancing on the berms and it also helped to have good pump skills, so that when you get over the berm and those little bumps you can get that extra boost.”

MONSTER ARMY TOUR
The guys from Monster Energy sent us a tour diary entry from their trip up to Knysna:
Andrew Nero from Africa Skate has been in Knysna developing the skate scene in the area. Recently he hosted a skate comp for the locals at The Yard. Monster Energy brought up Khule Ngubane from Durban with some of the 20sk8 skaters: Shuaib Philander, Ryan Naidoo, Wesley Schroeder and Grant Mclachlan to come hype up the kids and skate in the comp. On Friday the we arrived at The Yard and we watched some of the local kids skate the best trick comp where they skated in a jam session in the outdoor part of the skatepark to win some product from Selfish Skatedboards. There is some growing talent coming out of Knysna and I’m sure that this skate park is going to help build the skate community. After the session we headed out to Plett to check out what Plett rage was all about. Everyone got turned up and we all spent way to much money on box cocktails.
The next day we hit up the park again to skate in the advanced comp and to once again watch the locals show us their skills. It was a really chilled comp and we all just had a fun session together. In the advanced comp Khule came first, Grant came second, and Shuaib third, which really helped because we had no money after raging the night before.
When we got back to Plett we spent the rest of our time racing the pit bike, playing XBox and trying to find the people that stole some of our bags.
On Sunday we skated around Plett looking for street spots, but every place we found had police trying to take away our boards, so we missioned to Mossel Bay and filmed some street for a bit then headed back to Cape Town. Khule is going to be staying here for a while to film for his next video part.
THE BERRICS CAPE TOWN EDIT
Finally, footage requested by The Berrics is being sent out to them today! We’ll keep you posted on when they put up the edit on their site. Thanks to everyone who got involved, and a special thank you to Greg Maxwell, Andrew van der Walt and Grant Mclachlan.

KDC HOOD TO HOOD TEAM SKATE CHAMPS
The Hood to Hood Finals brought out 4-person teams, featuring SA’s best skaters for a head to head single elimination jam format competition. Teams were chosen via online video entry, Hood to Hood Qualifiers at Boogaloos Grand Slam events in CPT, DBN, and JHB, along with the last minute qualifiers at KDC on Wednesday, bringing in the wildcard team, “Here by Chance” to the brackets.
With R25k first place prize on the line, we saw skating that was equally as gnarly as the pros from several of the skaters. In particular, “The Scumbags” and “The Woolf’s” brought the heat and took no prisoners. We saw several kickflip front board attempts from JHB young gun Brandon Valjalo in the first two rounds, and after several attempts with no luck along with a “contest make”, he pulled it just in time for the buzzer in the finals. The Woolf’s and Anthony De Mendonca also held it down for their crew. Adam Woolf pulled a kickflip back lip and several kickflips over the 4 block rail and his brother was backing him up with front salads and front nosegrinds down the 4 stair rail every try. Anthony’s flawless skating definitely complimented the rest of the team’s flow and landed “The Woolf’s and Two Other Dudes” 2nd place and R10000, respectively. Emcee Jeff Pang renamed ”Here by Chance” to “Beer by Chance”, but it was for sure that rounds were to be bought by HBC when they took out the Dope/Plankie team, landing them in 3rd place and R5000.
“The Scumbags” blew minds in Durban at the Hood to Hood Qualifiers, putting on a full-on demo, earning them a spot in the Hood to Hood Championships at KDC. There was some stiff competition, especially from The Woolf’s, but it was almost obvious from the beginning of the contest who was going to win. Dlamini’s frontside flips over the 4 stair rail, Braxton’s back noseblunts, Jean Marc’s kickflip melon’s combined with Khule’s consistency landed them the gold and R25000 in cash.
