Artist’s Statement
For as long as I can remember I have used art to define and document my experiences. We all start that way, some of us stop doing it at some point for better suited tools of expression. The inexactness of outcome always suited me and yet my work has evolved more and more towards exactness. In the process of cutting more and more detailed works I started to become aware of variation and indeed of repetition. Each shape morphing from square to diamond to triangle, and each variation leading to the next, all forming a larger fabric and pattern. A system connected. Our world is often defined by our differences rather than the reality of parts of a whole. I became interested in the things that make us the same. Even if art is reduced only to a visual experience, trying to create an experience that could both inspire and suggest a wide variety of narratives. The viewer is invited to tailor his/her own experience, and thus engaging personally. A person of faith may read and interpret religious or spiritual implications while a more scientifically minded individual could see Geometry yet both narratives describe a larger system encompassing a whole.

There is a tension, which exists between the apparent fragility of the medium played against the strength of connectivity in a radiant fabric of variation.

Artist’s Profile
Tahiti Pehrson spent his early years without electricity growing up in a bohemian artist household in Northern California. Art was a mode of entertainment without television or music and long hours were spent in nature and drawing. Influenced by the burgeoning skateboarding and punk scene of the mid Nineteen-eighties and later engaging in the San Francisco street art and graffiti culture of the late Nineties. Traveling Europe and China in search of art enrichment and later attending the San Francisco Art Institute as a painting major, Pehrson left after a year and a half. A practice of stencil-making and street art evolved into a more and more detailed practice of paper cutting two and three-dimensional works.

Pehrson has been working and exhibiting in hand cut paper for the last fifteen years. Over the last five plus years his works have concentrated on highly detailed geometric patterns called Guilloche which date back to Classical Greek and Roman times, later to be perfected by the Rose Engine Lathe in France in the late 1700’s. Today these patterns can be seen on almost every currency in the world as well as hub cups watches and also seem to touch on the design sense intrinsic to nature. These highly detailed monochromatic works create with light and shadow a hypnotic field of Moire patterning.

With many intersections creating a larger fabric, themes in the work center around Connectivity, Systems, Variation and fragility.

Dreamshade in South Africa

Dreamshade are a Swiss Metal band, and will be here soon for their South African tour. We caught up with them for a quick interview…

Introduce yourselves! Who are you? What do you guys do outside of the band?
Hello everyone! We are Dreamshade, a Metal band from Lugano, Switzerland. Outside of the band we all work or study.

How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?
People have been trying to label our music with thousands of different names but I don’t actually think it’s possible to find the right one. Let’s just say our music is strongly based on melodies, atmospheres, power and epicness, all blended together with a groovy sound. It’s very modern and fresh.

What’s behind the name Dreamshade?
The band name came out somehow in 2007. We were in our rehearsal room and had a few beers, you know… we were kids and not able to hold our drinks. Then we spat out some ideas to represent the meaning of this band. We needed some words to express what this band means to us so the word “Dream” came out, but a dream is something you only live when you are sleeping so we wanted our band name to express what remains of our dreams, which is actually their shades.

We’re looking forward to your tour here! Do you have any expectations or pre-conceived ideas of South Africa?
We all know that South Africa is a very beautiful country. Our guitarist Rocco has been there once already and always told us we need to get there. We are very excited about playing your country and are really grateful for this opportunity. Just can’t wait to be there with all of you and taste your wine!

Dreamshade The Gift of Life

Take us through your typical songwriting process.
I usually write music and lyrics separately and independently. The majority of the riffs come from me and Rocco while the lyrics come from me and our singer Kevin. When we feel a song’s music is finally getting shaped and the structure makes sense we forward it to the rest band for approval and arrangements. As soon as the music is ready me and Kevin try to match the lyrics with the feeling of the song. This takes a significant amount of time as we write many vocal harmonies and rhythms.

Where do you draw influence/inspiration from?
We are often influenced by non-metal music. Most of the time our stuff comes from Ambient, Hip Hop, Punk, Pop, Rock or even Ethnic music and then transformed into our style. I know this sounds weird but that’s a true story. Always remember, the more influences you have, the more unique your music will sound.

What themes/topics do you lyrics mostly consist of? Who writes them?
As I said, me and Kevin write all the lyrics. The themes are constantly changing but we are always influenced by life. Kevin’s lyrics are usually more direct, I write more poetical stuff instead.

Do you only listen to Metal, or are there other genres you like? What do you listen to to unwind?
We don’t listen to Metal so often. We are very open-minded and listen to thousands of artists of any kind of music. I would suggest you a new Malaysian artist called Yuna; go check her out, she’ll blow your mind!

When is the end of the world?
The end of the world will happen when we land in South Africa. Prepare yourselves for the blast!

How does the Metalcore scene in Switzerland compare to other scenes you’ve experienced?
We’re not very related to Metalcore actually. The music scene in our country is very small. I guess we are more popular in other countries. It’s pretty good anyway.

What other Swiss bands should we be keeping an ear out for?
If you’re looking for some new and good Swiss Metal I would suggest Eluveitie and Breakdown Of Sanity.

Anything else to would like to say?
We absolutely can’t wait to play for you in South Africa! I’m sure we will be able to see wonderful things and make new awesome friends! Spread our music among your friends and pre-order your tickets ’cause May is coming soon!

The bracingly political Florida punk band Against Me! has been a going concern since 1997, but Transgender Dysphoria Blues can’t help but feel like a debut: It’s the group’s first album since singer Tom Gabel came out as a woman. Now named Laura Jane Grace, she still barks her lyrics with fiercely assertive intelligence – with a voice as yet largely unchanged from the one in the band’s earlier work – but Against Me!’s subject matter can’t help but be turned on its head.

It’s right there in Transgender Dysphoria Blues’ title that Against Me! intends to address Grace’s new identity upfront: This is a coming-out record first and foremost, from its opening line – “Your tells are so obvious / shoulders too broad for a girl” – through songs that channel her fears and characteristic defiance. At times joltingly profane, Transgender Dysphoria Blues doesn’t let up for 29 brisk minutes, but real tenderness and vulnerability surfaces in the melee. In “Unconditional Love,” Grace repeats the self-lacerating line, “Even if your love was unconditional / it still wouldn’t be enough to save me” – a terrifying and revealing notion, even as Grace remains by all accounts happily married to her wife.

Against Me!’s music only addressed gender issues in passing before Transgender Dysphoria Blues, so the album certainly qualifies as a left turn. But the end result is just as catchy and anthemic as the terrific speedball punk records that precede it. Gabel always told the truth as he saw it, so it makes sense that Laura Jane Grace would do the same, with the added benefit of comfort and courage in her own skin.

SID: Superman is Dead

Dennis Morris and Shepard Fairey currently have an exhibition on called SID: SUPERMAN IS DEAD, which features paintings, prints and photographs of Sid Vicious, along with a life-size replica of a hotel room destroyed by Sid in 1977.

Shepard Fairey’s SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS will be transported back to 1977 Britain beginning 8 pm Friday, December 13 when Fairey and internationally renowned, British photographer Dennis Morris host the opening of SID: Superman Is Dead. The show will feature collaborative paintings, photographs and prints of, and inspired by, Sid Vicious’ tenure as the Sex Pistols’ bassist.

Born John Simon Ritchie, Vicious’ time with the Pistols was as brief as it was chaotic and legendary. Since his death in early 1979 at the age of 21, Sid has been immortalized as a punk rock icon in countless posthumous recordings, films, T-shirts, action figures etc. SID: Superman Is Dead is possibly the ultimate of these tributes, its centerpiece being a recreation of a hotel room trashed by Sid in a fit of intoxication, rage and depression during the infamous S.P.O.T.S. (Sex Pistols On Tour Secretly) tour of 1977, during which the Pistols were forced to play every date under pseudonyms to avoid cancellation.

The SID: Superman Is Dead opening reception will also feature a once in a lifetime live musical homage to Sid in the form of Ritchie Love, an exclusive assemblage of his contemporaries from the original punk rock era. The band is comprised of Sex Pistols guitarist, co-founder and Vicious band mate Steve Jones; Generation X co-founder Billy Idol, who ran with early Pistols support gang the Bromley Contingent; Bow Wow Wow co-founder and early Adam & The Ants guitarist Leigh Gorman; and Blondie co-founder and erstwhile Ramones and Iggy Pop drummer Clem Burke.

The Sex Pistols changed my life when I discovered them in 1984. Their music alone made my arm hairs stand up, but their image and attitude were just as important and powerful. The member of the Sex Pistols who I was drawn to and most epitomized the punk image for me was Sid Vicious, with his spiked hair, leather jacket, lock necklace, and reckless behavior. At 14 I was mesmerized by Sid and made my first homemade t-shirt of him snarling his lip defiantly. I was rebelling, looking for any way to irritate my parents and, before I knew better, Sid was my Superman. Sid self-destructed young and with punk’s slogans like “No Future” and “Live Fast, Die Young,” Sid was everything the Superman, anti-hero, or cliché of a nihilistic movement called for. Sid didn’t really do much to shape punk music… he only actually played on two songs on Never Mind the Bollocks Here’s The Sex Pistols. However, Sid’s surly vocals kick ass on C’mon Everybody, Somethin’ Else, and My Way. Sid remains one of punk’s most enduring icons even if he is a classic example of style over substance. I was a sucker for Sid’s image as a teenager, and I still am, even though I see him as less “cool” and more tragic and cautionary these days. I have made many images of Sid over the years, and I thought I had retired him as a subject until Dennis Morris – the photographer of the most intimate and iconic shots of Sid-approached me about a collaboration. Dennis’s archive provided an amazing treasure trove of Sid images to work from in creating the paintings and prints in the “Superman Is Dead” show. I’m so glad I got to do Dennis’s Sid images “My Way”! I can now retire Sid as a subject. I’ve worked with the best, I can skip the rest.” – Shepard Fairey

Working from the title, S.I.D (Superman is Dead), these photographs sum up/represent the image Sid portrayed of himself to the public. He was hero, villain, fearless, innocent and like a supernova, he shone bright, lived fast, died young. Punk needed a hero, Sid became that hero / anti-hero. The idea for the exhibition came from a mutual admiration and respect of each other’s work (for Shepard and I). When Shepard and I eventually met, the exhibition was born on that first meeting. It had to happen. And a happening it will be!” – Dennis Morris

Where does the name ‘Truth And Its Burden’ come from?

It’s basically been derived from a song by a band called The Hope Conspiracy. They have this song called “Youth And Its Burden” and I just kind of changed it up and made new sense of it.

Who’s in the band? What do you guys do outside of TAIB?

The band is made up of the following dudes: Ashley / Vocals (Me) – I do graphic and web design for my own business called Capture Creative Design, Calvin / Guitar – works as an internal sales manager for a music distribution company called Agent Audio, Niekie / Bass – works as a sales clerk for a 24 hour pawn shop and Matt / Drums – works as a store manager for a bicycle shop in Fourways.

Tell us more about your recent American and European tour overseas.

The tours were all great. We had loads of fun, and learnt a lot about ourselves and each other. While enjoyable at the best of times, they were also tough and really gave us a more real perspective on our dreams and what we want with Truth and Its Burden in the future. I think overall we were well received abroad and we definitely are looking forward to getting back over there on bigger and better touring opportunities.

Why do you think hardcore, metal and punk music isn’t that big in South Africa, as opposed to places in Europe where you can get 60000 people at a festival?

I don’t think media cares too much for it, which sadly seeps into the general public. This might sound off-centre, but I do feel popularity is all based on perception; if media says it’s cool, then it’s cool. Right now the media here don’t think those genres are cool, whereas a few years ago they had frequent attention in magazines like Blunt, which played a huge role in placing these genres in the average kid’s pathway from early on. Radio stations like 5FM gave a damn and Barney Simon really believed in South African hard music. It was on his show that I was introduced to Shifty, Tweak, Fuzigish, and that whole live music scene for me followed shortly thereafter. MK had the opportunity to carry that torch but focus attention on the same thing too often, and only selective shows like MK Ondergrond place some mild attention on harder music. I think people took a lot for granted back then and no one followed in those steps, and by the time people thought to, the momentum built up by the above mentioned had almost disappeared entirely. I’m sure there are many factors though. I’m not even scratching the surface.

I think sometimes a lot people are keen to get involved, but actually don’t know where to start. What advice can you give someone one how to find out about upcoming events, bands etc. in the more ‘underground’ music world?

Back when I started booking shows, there was a need to create that market. I was playing in a small unknown punk band and we needed shows. We knew we would have a really difficult time getting shows with bigger, more prominent bands, so we started booking our own shows with venues, making our own flyers etc. We never had the Facebook and Myspace online outlets and relied on word of mouth, other shows and participating in a scene daily. There was a need to exist in a place we called home, which was created purely, I feel, by knowing what you wanted in life. I, like many other musicians and participants in the scene knew this early on, and because you know this about yourself, you seek out like-minded folk and express your need to contribute and participate. The easiest advice though is this: go to shows and support live music. If it grips you and sparks your absolute interest then stay involved and you’ll soon enough find yourself doing something constructive within that scene/subculture.

Your lyrics seem to hold some substance to them. What would you hope that people get out of listening to your music or watching you live?

It would be nice for people to feel good about life; just a general change of perspective on how good our lives really are. To understand that we are all very fortunate, as fortunate as being able to read and understand the text in this interview or having the means to have found this website. Sounds crazy to some folks, but there are people who literally have nothing. We just want people to feel like they can reach their dreams and be stoked on life and their talents and achievements. Few people see their own worth. That’s the real tragedy in all this, and because of it they stay in shit jobs and live life on the ‘just getting by’ mentality.

You’re touring SA with US band Betrayal closer to the end of this year. Can you tell us more about that?

We’re stoked of course, as any band would be. It’s a great opportunity for us to show the dudes what a beautiful country we have. We met Sean while on tour in USA, so having the guys out here is a real treat indeed. We will be touring alongside Conqueror as well, who have been the talk of town lately so we’re super excited to see how it all plays out. The shows are going through the entire country with fresh stop-offs in new territory like George, so we’re super excited to see how that comes together. Also, the choice of venues for the tour is totally different for hardcore bands, and we’re really trying something new. Hopefully people see this and the shows attract some new faces across the board.

What does the future hold for TAIB?

Who knows hey. We have plans of touring Europe again, as well as USA in 2014, but we have much to work out before that actually happens. We’re writing a new album at the moment, so our energy is totally focused on that right now.

Any upcoming bands we should look out for?

Hmm… Maybe not upcoming bands so much as albums we found and love; Misery Signals – Absent Light, Shai Hulud – Reach Beyond The Sun, Counterparts – The Difference Between Hell And Home, Mercia – Exile In Ruin. Most of you probably know these bands already, but they released solid albums and these are busting our ears lately.

Truth And Its Burden

RAYMOND PETTIBON’S WORK FOR BLACK FLAG

If you are a skateboarder, listen to punk, or just a human being who keeps their eyes open, you will have heard of Black Flag. If you have heard of Black Flag, you will probably have seen some of their infamous show flyers, which will most likely have been done by Raymond Pettibon. He has also done a lot of work for Sonic Youth, another band you should have heard of. Even if you haven’t seen a copy of his original artwork, it is highly likely that you’ve seen a rip-off of it somewhere.

Raymond Pettibon has arguably produced some of the most controversial music artwork ever. His work has a really dark, anarchic feel to them, and are basically guaranteed to make your parents worry. It is quite simple in the way that it is usually just black on white paper, not far off from the original sketches, but the meaning it packs is often commentary on various topics and has obviously been considered and thought about.

They were arguably one of the most influential and important punk bands of their time. We are extremely excited for this film, and can’t wait to see it already! Beach Party are an ‘Psychedelic-Afro-Disco-Surf-Punk’ band from Cape Town. They’ve just released a rad new album, and are pretty busy playing shows and touring. We caught up with the band to chat about playing shows in South Africa, opening for Australian band Dune Rats, and some crazy fan stories. Enjoy…

First things first, what style of music do you play? For the dumb assess that don’t know who you are or what genre to make of you.
Our music is in the style of ‘Psychedelic-Afro-Disco-Surf-Punk’ also known as ‘Afrodelic-Psyfro-Sisco-Purf-Dunk’ or just ‘Drunk’.

What would you say your all-round fav gig has been so far? The kind that is rad for its fuck ups or its perfection.
Our favorite gig ever was in Pretoria at Arcade Empire. It was wild like the motherfucking jungle that night. Shoh. Makki spent most of the time in the audience moshing with his bass and kicking kids in the face. Black Irish was drumming with his teeth at one point in the show. Nuts.

If you could mention an up and coming gig that you are mad hyped on that would be spiffy.
We’re very much looking forward to playing Sowing The Seeds festival this weekend on Saturday. If you’re in Mpumalanga then that’s where you need to be.

Beach Party just played a show with Dune Rats from Australia. Tell us how the gig went and what your opinions are on Dune Rats as a band and how they where in person.
The gig was frakkin’ rad! Loads of people showed up and partied super hard which was just lovely. They are really cool guys, exactly like they are in that music video where they just smoke bongs. When we met them they were hitting bongs and when we left them they were still hitting bongs. If you think it’s mad how tight they play it’s just insane how stoned they are when they walk on stage and hold it together like kings! I think we were all stoned once for a show and we forgot everything. Maybe they’ll teach us the ways this weekend.

You guys have done a few shows/festivals nationally. Which town are your fave to play in and your fav crowd to play for?
Have to say Pretoria and Joburg when it comes to touring, they get the fuck down with us.

Are there any thoughts of Beach Party sailing the seven seas, exploring the top ten beaches of the world or recording an album in a submarine or a whale’s stomach?
So many thoughts! We’re working on that. Aiming for a Narwhal’s intestines though, the acoustics are so squishy. Mmm.

Your audience seems youngish, have any of the band members come across some stalkers or crazy fans? If yes, tell us a story.
Hmmm… Well Andy has a fan site dedicated to his hair where all these creepy girls photoshop his hair on to their elbows. One fan/friend of ours made an animated fan video of us which is awesome but the video is slightly creepy in a good way. Look up ‘Beach Party – Fast Train’. Big D is the most famous though.
