THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF SKATEBOARDER JP DU PREEZ

JP Du Preez is not only a shit hot skateboarder, he is also a phenomenal photographer. An exhibition of his work is currently up at the Revolution store in Menlyn, so we sent him some questions to find out more…
How long have you been studying photography for and what was the experience like for you?
I studied Photography for 2 years and it was really rad because it was one of the biggest learning experiences that I’ve ever had.
Do you think you’ll ever take photo’s of skating or do you prefer doing more art photography?
I love art! But I always wanted to get into documentation and that is part of skateboarding.
Where were most of these photos taken? In Joburg?
Most of these Images were taken in Pretoria and Johannesburg but The image “Stairway To Heaven” was taken on a skate trip in Frances Town, Botswana.
Do you have any photographers who’s photos you really like?
Skateboarding photographers: Brain Gaberman, Atiba Jefferson, J. Grant Brittain
Documentary Photographers: James Nachtwey, he is an American photojournalist and war photographer.
What sort of photography do you want to get into doing in the future?
Documentary, Skateboarding, Art, Portrait, Fashion, landscapes and anything that I can enjoy.
