Midway Mayhem Returns to Kimberley
Some of the thousands of local kids that have lined up to attend weekly free skateboarding clinics at the Kumba Skate Plaza in Kimberley, Northern Cape.
Kimberley gets its own grand slam skateboarding event
Skateboarding enthusiasts in the Northern Cape can look forward to one of the biggest skateboarding events in the country when the Midway Mayhem takes place at the Kumba Skate Plaza on Saturday, 18 April. The event falls exactly halfway between the 2014 and 2015 Kimberley Diamond Cup skateboarding world championships presented by Kumba Iron Ore, a business unit of Anglo American.
According to John Block, MEC for the Department of Economic Affairs and Tourism of the Northern Cape Provincial Government, Midway Mayhem sports a unique character. “Now only in its second year, the event has become legendary in skateboarding circles and is completely different from any other skateboarding events hosted in the country. It is not only a really tough contest, but it also allows participants to enjoy the community of skateboarding. It sends a message that the world championships are on the way and renews interest in our world-class skate park, which has become a global phenomenon,” mentions Block.
As the best skate plaza in Africa, the Kimberley facility is the only one of its kind in the world offering free access, training clinics and contests all-year round. Thousands of skaters are drawn to the state-of-the-art facility on an annual basis and it has become one of the key tourism attractions in the capital city of South Africa’s largest province.
Yvonne Mfolo, Executive Head of Public Affairs of presenting sponsor Kumba Iron Ore, welcomes the event back to the province. “The Northern Cape government has identified the sport of skateboarding as an appropriate vehicle to promote the province as the ultimate adventure and extreme sport destination, while simultaneously making a significant contribution to youth development. As a company, we’ve had the privilege of observing the positive impact this programme has had on local communities and are proud to offer our support.”
This year’s Midway Mayhem is billed as a Grand Slam event during which top skateboarders will be able to qualify for the KDC skateboarding world championships in October. At the same time, it will also feature a Skateboarding for Hope tour stop with skateboarding clinics for underprivileged youth from the region. The top street skater will walk away with one of the top prize purses available in South Africa.
Midway Mayhem will feature five different categories, including contests for 13 & Under TOPGROM skaters, riders aged 14 & Over, women street skaters, vert skaters and the Rider Cup team contest. The street contests will feature a novel format not often seen in South African competitions with the top skaters going head to head in the finals. Midway Mayhem is also one of the few contests showcasing the vert skating talent in the country and the depth of skills of local female skateboarders.
Registration starts at 09h00 followed by Skateboarding for Hope clinics, qualifiers and finals in each category. Live entertainment will be provided during the lunch break and the prize-giving is scheduled for 18h15.

“Where should I start? I love skateboarding and what it has too offer, but most of all how far it’s got me. This has been in the works for a hot sec now. It’s incredible to watch something you’ve put so much hard work towards unfold into the most amazing thing. I couldn’t have done this without my incredible friend Lawrence Mccullum. Words cannot explain how thankful, blessed, and honored I am to do what I do. Hope you all enjoy yourselves. OH AND KEEP SKATING.” – Thalente

Huge Boost for Skateboarding For Hope
The Skateboarding for Hope community outreach programme has received a significant boost with global apparel company Vans signing up as presenting partner for its year-long programme. As part of the run-up to the Kimberley Diamond Cup skateboarding world championships presented by Kumba Iron Ore in October, the Skateboarding for Hope road show will travel the country to introduce the youth of South Africa to the sport of skateboarding.
The Skateboarding for Hope road show is a youth development initiative launched by the Northern Cape Provincial Government four years ago to promote skateboarding as an affordable and accessible leisure activity. The tour itinerary for 2015 includes fifteen Skateboarding for Hope activations around the country from bustling urban skate parks in Johannesburg to deep rural towns in the Northern Cape.
According to Tim McFerran from World Skateboarding Grand Prix, the global leader in skateboarding event management, they are very excited about Vans’ support of the Skateboarding for Hope initiatives throughout South Africa. “Their support will be invaluable in growing these events nationally and moving them to the next level. Vans play a prominent role in the skateboarding community in South Africa and we are delighted in the joint commitment to the development of skateboarding in this country. This initiative is very important to both the Kimberley Diamond Cup and the Northern Cape as it forms part of our aggressive approach to youth development and providing our youth access to skateboarding. This is also a great community service as it provides fun events for the kids to engage them in a meaningful way and teaches them skateboarding and life skills. The programme also gains access to marginalised youth, a vital part of our local communities that is often overlooked,” mentions McFerran.
Since 2011, the Skateboarding for Hope community outreach initiative has hosted more than 500 activations and handed out more than 5000 skateboards to youth at risk and underprivileged kids. During the first part of 2014, the programme touched the lives of more than 18000 youth throughout South Africa. The nationwide tour creates enormous exposure for skateboarding and also provides young skaters with the opportunity to grow and improve their skills. In addition, it also promotes tourism to the Northern Cape and creates awareness of the numerous skate parks that have been built in the province.
According to Vans marketing manager Warren Talbot, “Vans is committed to skateboarding, but more importantly, we are committed to developing skateboarding in South Africa. It is a privilege to be a partner of Skateboarding for Hope as we continue to build and support the KDC tour 2015,” states Talbot.
The Skateboarding for Hope tour stops will include:
14 March – Brightwater, Johannesburg
2 May – Johannesburg
16 May – Somerset West, Western Cape
13 June – Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban
17 – 19 June – Northern Cape Youth Month Tour

Skateistan Building a Skate School in JHB
The best thing about skating is that it keeps us away from the streets and drugs. – Happy, 12, Skateistan South Africa student
Over 100 students already participate in Skateistan South Africa’s regular programming and this number is growing every week. They now need a space of their own for the kids to learn and play! You can help them fund the creation of a safe learning center and skatepark in central Johannesburg by making a donation.
Scheduled to open in mid-2015, Skateistan South Africa’s skate school will be a safe space for ages 5-25, with a focus on girls, migrants and vulnerable youth.
So far they’ve raised 58,275 USD during the Keep Skateistan Rolling campaign. With your help they can reach our goal of 60,000 USD and continue to provide safe spaces and quality programming to over 1200 youth each week.
Your investment in Skateistan allows them to ensure their skate schools in Afghanistan, Cambodia and South Africa are safe, inspiring environments for our students, especially the skater girls.
Click HERE to make a donation.
A Safe Space for At-Risk Youth
You have to think bigger than the streets. Think bigger than where you come from. – Ayanda Mnyandu, Skateistan South Africa Operations Officer
In South Africa, children under the age of 18 make up 37% of the population. Youth face a range of issues such as urban poverty, health issues (particularly related to HIV), lack of employment opportunities, social/racial divisions, and gender-based violence. In our focus area of central Johannesburg, young people, especially those from low income and migrant backgrounds, face violence, drug abuse, poor quality education, and social isolation.
Located on 990m2 of donated land in central Johannesburg, the skate school will include a containerized education and training center, together with an outdoor skateboard plaza (concept pictured above). Programming will run six days per week, with a capacity to teach up to 700 children weekly.
The learning center will feature a classroom, study lab, office, and multi-purpose rooftop space. Beside it will be an outdoor skate plaza (the only one in central Johannesburg). The entire space will reflect the creativity, inspiration and new opportunities for the youth.
Watch our new “Safe Spaces” video to see what Skateistan youth think about having a safe space to skate and learn. In a neighborhood that includes both a rundown, low-income industrial area and the growing artistic community of Maboneng, the Skateistan South Africa skate school promises to be a transformative and exciting space for youth coming from all walks of life.
The long-term vision is for the skate school to become a training hub for youth to create and lead their own community projects in South Africa and the continent.
What Your Donation Can Do
Every bit counts. To give you an idea of just what your donation can do, here are some examples:
$10 – Emergency first-aid supplies for student injuries
$50 – Monthly internet connection for student exchange programs
$100 – Wood to repair our mini ramp in Johannesburg each year
In-kind sponsorship to reduce costs. If you area able to provide shipping containers in South Africa please contact us at development@skateistan.org.

Jean-Marc at Tampa Am
Jean-Marc Johannes just got back from the States, where he spent some time in LA, and then competed in the 22nd Tampa Am in Florida.
Apparently this year’s Tampa Am was the biggest one yet, with close to 300 skaters from all over the world competing.
My aim going into any contest is to ultimately win but also do better than before. This year I was very great full to do better than that and get top 50 out of Tampa AM contest! My run was different, I wanted to learn new tricks going in to the contest. I stayed in L.A for about 2 weeks prior to the contest, practicing every day and learning all new tricks with help of two international pro skateboarders and good friends Sewa Kroetkov and Micky Papa at the Berrics. – Jean-Marc
Big ups Jean-Marc! We’re proud of you. Keep an eye on this guy; he’s going places.

South Africa celebrated Heritage Day on 22 September 2014, a day in which we celebrate our diverse cultures.
At the core of skateboarding culture is Jay Adams, who passed away earlier this year. Jay, is the original seed and his style and skill has no forebears. Jay Adams is skateboarding personified, and for this reason we pay tribute and celebrate his life as a legend.
For the first time in South Africa, we are urging skaters to revel in our heritage, not as a “sub culture” or “fringe sport” but as a legitimate culture and community.
So we met up with a bunch of skaters on Sea Point Promenade in Cape Town to pay tribute and celebrate our skate heritage.

Kimberley, South Africa – October 3, 2014
Day one of the Kimberley Diamond Cup Skateboarding World Championships presented by Kumba Iron Ore got off to an exciting start with the high flying action of the Big Air World Championships followed by the inaugural Women’s Street World Championships.
First up was Big Air and Jono Schwan landed a heelflip body varial 360 over the gap to a 900 on the quarterpipe, earning him the title and a $22,000 cash prize.
The inaugural Women’s Street Championships featured standout performances by Alexis Sablone (kickflip front 50-50) and Brazilian Pamela Rosa (frontside boardside the big rail), but it was Samarria Brevard, who ripped the entire course and front-180’d the entire manual pad. “I was very nervous before we started skating, but I’m so excited having won!” said Brevard. “My mom was worried because I had to travel on my own to get here – it’s my first time out of the country – but both of my parents are very supportive of me skateboarding and will be so happy for me!”
The first day of competition ended with a concert featuring dance performances and popular South African musicians followed by a 15-minute fireworks show. “It was a great start of what promises to be a fantastic weekend of skateboarding,” said Tim McFerran, CEO of World Skateboarding Grand Prix. “Skateboarders have travelled from all over the world, from 37 countries, and today we saw just a small preview of the caliber of skateboarding we’re in store for this weekend.”

37 Countries Represented at Kimberley Diamond Cup
Nyjah Huston in action during the final heat of the 2013 Kimberley Diamond Cup presented by Kumba Iron Ore. The defending champion is back in Kimberley to battle some of the top pro skaters from around the globe.
Nyjah Huston will return to Kimberley to defend his world title against an unprecedented global roster from 37 countries at the Kimberley Diamond Cup presented by Kumba Iron Ore from 2 – 5 October 2014. The best pro street skaters from the United States will join the top skateboarders from around the world to battle it out in Kimberley, South Africa in October for their share of the R5 million prize purse, the largest single event prize purse in skateboarding.
“The unprecedented global participation in this year’s championships gives us the unique opportunity to showcase our beautiful country to the world and will also allow our young people to be inspired by these incredible athletes,” said John Block, MEC of the Department of Economic Development and Tourism of the Northern Cape provincial government. “This contest has grown beyond what we anticipated. It is now the premier skateboarding competition in the world and all eyes will be on Kimberley. We can’t wait to see the incredible talent that will no doubt be displayed during this year’s competition. It promises to be a truly historic event!”
“It is also an unbelievable opportunity for the Northern Cape to showcase itself as an extraordinary tourism destination and we are looking forward to welcoming the participants and their supporters with the traditional warm Northern Cape hospitality. We would be proud to share our tourism treasures with them – extreme nature, extreme culture and extreme adventure. We would like to encourage them to take this chance to explore the magic of South Africa’s largest province,” mentions Block.
Nyjah Huston, last year’s street skateboarding world champion, along with other top U.S. pros, will battle the top skaters from around the world in a fast-paced, adrenaline packed contest that takes place on the state-of-the-art Kumba Skate Plaza. Currently 37 countries are sending their best skaters to the world championships, including countries competing on the international stage for the first time such as Turkey, Vietnam, Philippines, Namibia, Mauritius Islands and Malaysia.
“To have so many countries competing in the World Championships is unprecedented in skateboarding,” said Tim McFerran, CEO of World Skateboarding Grand Prix. “Since there are only a handful of countries with federations established for skateboarding, most countries do not have any formalised means to support their top skateboarders to get to international contests. For them, it is crucial to get financial help to get to these contests. Even the US, as advanced as it is in skateboarding, has no mechanism in place to get governmental help to send its top skateboarders to the big contests and it has to rely on brands to help,” mentions McFerran. “Over the last seven months, we’ve seen first-hand the challenges in getting skaters to the world championships in countries that have no existing federation. We’ve been working feverishly to assist countries to help bring their skaters to South Africa. We want to help support the growing skateboarding talent around the world and to ensure that skateboarders who have the talent, but not the means, are represented in major events like the skateboarding world championships.”
The growing list of countries participating in the 2014 Skateboarding World Championships includes: Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Botswana, Brasil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Egypt, Ethiopia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Lesotho, Malaysia, Mauritius Islands, Mexico, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Netherlands, Philippines, Reunion, Russia, South Africa, Swaziland, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States and Vietnam.
For an up-to-date list of skateboarders and countries that will be represented at the 2014 Skateboarding World Championships, visit www.KimberleyDiamondCup.com. The Skateboarding World Championships at the Kimberley Diamond Cup will be broadcast live in South Africa on SuperSport and distributed globally in 173 countries reaching 367 million homes worldwide. The event will also be webcast live.

Durban Go Skateboarding Day 2014
The IS skatepark in the military museum on Durban’s beachfront was more than just the central hub of Durban skateboarding to me – it was very close to my heart – a project I was instrumentally involved in, one that turned into our own TF and something that really helped the DBN scene progress. It played its role for a period of time, and then its time was up to make way for the next wave of progression. It’s in honour of that history and heritage that we took the GoSkateDay session to the grounds the skatepark used to occupy – enjoy! – Andrew Morck
